I am interested in having middle school students involved in the design process. I am the sponsor for the arts and craft club at a middle school in California. It would be a good life lesson for the students to be able to watch an design go from concept to reality.

I think that’s a great idea! I’d like to see a design go from concept to reality, myself. We haven’t quite gotten there yet, but hopefully we’ll be printing soon.
Seriously, though, we should do this. I have an idea: why don’t you do an internal contest within the club? It could be a great introduction to the collaborative process we use here. You could have the kids think of their best ideas, discuss them together, then focus on one and make it the best you can together.
One potential pitfall, though would be watering the idea down while trying to build consensus. To combat this, make sure that once you decide on the top idea you allow the design’s originator to lead the discussion. It may be difficult, but they must keep an open mind and listen to the input of the rest of the group without letting go of their initial concept.
What do you think?
(BTW, for those of you who haven’t been paying close attention to the blog, CorlissK is my mother)

The math thing is a spam protection mechanism. It’s there to make sure there is a real person behind each forum post.
Please do keep me posted. This should be fun.

I think this is a great idea! I wish I would have been able to do design work at the middle school level. By the time these kids get to college they will pretty much be professional designers!
I think design is not only a great subject to teach for art’s sake, but for the world’s sake too (this might sound cheezy, but I strongly believe this)! Design can teach you so much about life and it is always changing. It can teach you how to see, how to observe, and how to think. All these components are key in the design process. And actually making the final product is the fun part! Design can really infuence and persuade people which I think can be really powerful.
I am excited for these middle schoolers and I would encourage them to be open to their creative ability and really pursue it. I never thought I could do anything with my artsy side and now I am actaully a designer! Good luck to all those involved in this project, I hope to see the end result!

Hey Mia, that’s a great perspective. I’m sure the youngsters would appreciate input from a real designer if you would be willing to take a look at what they come up with.

I can’t believe my little sister is calling others youngsters. Where do the years go? :)
It will be very interesting to see what the group comes up with. I am always curious how others perceive the concept of Greater>Than.
